The Truth of Taraweeh 8 or 20 Rakat from Quran and Hadiths

The Truth of Taraweeh 8 or 20 Rakat from Quran and Hadiths

What is Taraweeh? How Many Rakats are there in Tarawih (Night Prayers of Ramadan)? How to Perform Taraweeh Salat? What is SALAT AL-TARAWEEH?

Watch this video to get all your answers by Renowed Islamic Scholar Hafiz Ehsan Qadri. This video will tell you the reality of How many rakats of Namaz (Taraweeh 8 or 20)  to pray? How to pray and How our beloved Prophet Muhammad Sallahu Alaihi wa Salam Prayed.

Open challenge By Hafiz Ehsan Qadri of One Million if any one proves Taraweeh is of 8 Rakats

The One Million Rupee reward- Taraweeh 8 Rakath challenge by Hafiz Ehsan Qadiri

Rs 1 Million as reward for the one who proves THARAVEEH to be 8 Rakaths from the Hadees below

Sahih Bukhari, Book of TAHAJJUD, Hadees no 248

Narrated Abu Salma bin 'Abdur Rahman: I asked 'Aisha, "How is the prayer of Allah's Apostle during the month of Ramadan." She said, "Allah's Apostle never exceeded eleven Rakat in Ramadan or in other months; he used to offer four Rakat-- do not ask me about their beauty and length, then four Rakat, do not ask me about their beauty and length, and then three Rakat." Aisha further said, "I said, 'O Allah's Apostle! Do you sleep before offering the Witr prayer?' He replied, 'O 'Aisha! My eyes sleep but my heart remains awake'!"

The explanation of the above Hadith

Tharaveeh changed to Night Prayer by the Wahabis/Salafis

Initially the Wahabis/Salafis tried to prove that Tharaveeh was 8 and not 20 by misquoting The Hadees of Syyida Aishah Siddeeqah (which is meant for Tahajjud and not Tharaveeh as it includes Ramazan and other Months as well)

Refer to the Hadees they quote

Some Points from the above Hadees

1. The Hadees is recorded by Imam Bukhari Alaihir Rahmah in the Chapter of Tahajjud, so to prove Tharaveeh from above is incorrect.

2. If this was for Tharaveeh, then they should offer Tharaveeh in the months other than Ramazan as well as mentioned in the above Hadees

3. They even cannot pray Tahajjud if they offer such lengthy Tharaveeh as mentioned in the above Hadees,

4. They should refrain wearing 3 quarter trousers, folding trousers upto the knee, praying without Turban or Cap because the Hadees talks about the beauty in Prayer and not like of ROWDIES

5. The Blessed Heart of Allah's Habeeb Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is always awake and engrossed in the remembrance of Allah Tha'ala and everything on the universe is apparent to The Most Beloved of Allah, Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.

And now, they started saying there is nothing called Tharaveeh and its only Qiyam ul Layl (Night Prayer) when they were badly exposed by Our Sunni Ulama

Dear Muslim brothers and sisters

Make sure to offer 20 Raka'aths as per The Established Sunnah and be away from such LAZY people

Isha Witr Namaz Dua - Dua-e-Qunoot

Isha Witr Namaz Dua - Dua-e-Qunoot

Dua-e-Qunoot is recited in the third rakat of Witr (Witar) Salaah in Isha Prayer.

Abdullah ibn Abbas Radi Allahu Anhu that the Holy Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam offered 3 Cycles (Rakaats) in the Witr Prayer as reported in Saheeh Muslim

Hazrat Ayesha Radi Allahu Anhu reported in Abu Dawood and Tirmidhi hadith that the Holy Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam used to offer 3 Cycles in the Witr Prayer. The Witr Prayer is Essential (Wajib) in the Night (Isha) Prayer.

Allahuma innaa nastaeenuka wa nastaghfiruka wa numinu bika wa natawakkalu alayka wa nusnee alaykal-khayra, wa nashkuruka wa laa nakfuruka wa nakhlaoo wa natruku maiy- yafjuruk, Allaahumma iyyaka nabudu wa laka nusallee wa nasjudu wa ilayka nasaa wa nahfidu wa narjoo rahmataka wa nakhshaa azaabaka inna azaabaka bilkuffari mulhiq.

"O Allah !! We seek Your help and seek Your forgiveness - and we believe in You and rely on You - and we praise You with all goodness - and we are thankful to You and not ungrateful to You - and we separate from and forsake whoever offends You. O Allah !! You alone we worship and for You only we offer the Prayer and the prostration. And towards You only do we rush, and present ourselves for service. And we hope for Your mercy and fear Your punishment. Indeed Your punishment will grasp the disbelievers."

If anyone doesn't know Qunoot Dua, he can recite the following dua:

Allahuma Rab-banaa Aatinaa Fid-dunyaa Hasanatan Wa Fil Aakhirati Hasanatan Wa Qinaa'Azaaban Naar.

"O our Rabb !! We seek of You good in this world and good in the Hereafter and safety from the torment of Hell." Or they should recite “Allahummaghfirlana” thrice.

Rules of Taraweeh Salat and Taraweeh Dua

Rules of Taraweeh Salat and Taraweeh Dua

Tarawih is the twenty Rakat Namaz that is Sunnat-e-Maukida and is prayed in the month of Ramadan after the Farz Namaz of Isha every night.

The time of Tarawih is after praying the Farz of Isha until the beginning of the break of dawn [Hidaya]. In Tarawih the Jamaat is Sunnat-e-Kifayaa, meaning if all the people of the Masjid missed it then they would all be responsible for the sin and if one person prayed at home alone then he has not committed a sin [Hidaya, Qazi Khan].

Taraweeh salat is offered in Cycles (Rakaats) of two each. After every 4 Cycles, it is recommended to sit for approximately the time it take to offer 4 Cycles. While sitting, one may keep quiet or recite the Kalemah, or the Salutations or recite the following “Tasbeeh”:

Taraweeh Dua | Tasbeeh Raraweeh Dua

Subhanal Malikil Quddus;
Subhana dhil Mulki wal Malakuti;
Subhana dhil izzati wal aDhmati wal haybati wal Qudrati;
wal kibriyaa’i wal jabaroot;
Subhanal Malikil hayyil ladhi, la yunaamu wa layamutu;
Subbuhun, Quddusun, Rabbuna Rabbul malaa’ikati war-rooh;
Allahumma Ajirnee Minan Naar;
Ya Mujeero, Ya Mujeero, Ya Mujeer.

Rules to be followed for Taraweeh Namaz
  1. It is Mustahhab to delay it until one third of the night has passed and if you wait until half the night has passed then there is no harm [Durr-e-Mukhtar, Bahar-e-Shariat].
  2. Just as the Tarawih is Sunnat-e-Maukida for men, in the same way it is Sunnat-e-Maukida for women and they are not allowed to miss it [Qazi Khan].
  3. The twenty Rakats of Tarawih are to be prayed in two, two Rakats i.e. performing salaam after every two Rakats and therefore in total ten salaams. After every four Rakats it is Mustahhab to rest for the duration it took to pray the four Rakats, this rest is called Tarwih [Alamgiri, Qazi Khan].
  4. After the Tarawih has finished the fifth Tarwih is also Mustahhab. If the fifth Tarwih is a burden on people then do not do it [Alamgiri, etc.].
  5.  There is flexibility in Tarwih, whether you remain quiet or you can pray some Tasbeeh, Quran, Durood Sharif or Dua and if he wished he can pray Nafl alone, but to do this with Jamaat is Makrooh [Qazi Khan].
  6. Those who have not prayed the Farz of Isha cannot pray the Tarawih nor Witr until he prays the Farz.
  7. Those who prayed the Farz of Isha alone can pray the Tarawih with Jamaat but he must pray the Witr alone [Durr-e-Mukhtar, Radd-ul-Mohtar].
  8. If you have prayed the Isha Farz with Jamaat and then prayed the Tarawih alone, he can join the Jamaat for Witr [Durr-e-Mukhtar, Radd-ul-Mohtar].
  9. If you have some Rakats of Tarawih left and the Imam has stood up for Witr then it is better to pray the Witr with Jamaat as long as you have prayed Isha Farz with Jamaat and then you can pray the remaining Rakats of Tarawih. It is also allowed to complete your Rakats of Tarawih and then pray Witr alone [Alamgiri, Radd-ul-Mohtar].
  10. If people have prayed the Tarawih and now they want to pray it again then they can pray it alone but it is not allowed to pray it with Jamaat again [Alamgiri]. If one Imam prays Tarawih in two masjids and if he prays the full Tarawih in both masjids then this is not allowed. If the Muqtadee prays the Tarawih in full in both masjids [hen there is no problem, however, he is not allowed to pray Witr again if he has already prayed in the first masjid [Alamgiri].
  11. It is better to pray the Tarawih with Jamaat in the masjid. If the Tarawih is prayed in a house with Jamaat then you will not get the sin of missing Jamaat as it will still be counted but the reward will be less than praying in the masjid [Alamgiri].
  12. The Tarawih prayed behind a child will not count for any adults who prayed behind the child [Hidaya, Durr-e-Mukhtar, Alamgiri].
  13. In the whole month of Ramadan to finish the Quran once is Sunnat-e-Maukidah and to finish it twice is virtuous and to finish it three times is a good thing. You should not miss this opportunity just because people are idle [Durr-e-Mukhtar].
  14. To give a Hafiz a salary for praying the Tarawih is not allowed and the giver and taker are both sinners. A salary is not just a fixing of the fee such as I will take this much for praying the Tarawih or I will give you so much for praying the Tarawih, but if a Hafiz believes he will pray at a certain place he will get so much then this is also not allowed. If the people say we will not give you anything or the Hafiz says I will not take anything and then the public decide to give the Hafiz a gift or some money as a gesture to thank him for his efforts then there is no problem with this [Bahar-e-Shariat].
  15. Shabinah meaning to finish the whole Quran in one night in Tarawih. During today's era where a Hafiz prays the Quran at great speed that the words cannot be understood. Never mind praying the words where the pronunciation is done correctly the listeners are also in a state where some are sat down, some are lying down, some are even sleeping and some perform the Takbeer-e-Tahmnah when the Imam goes into the Rukooh and then they are doing this very quickly, in all these situations the Shabinah is not allowed. If the Hafiz prays speedily to pose off then this is Haram and is a sinner.

How to perform Taraweeh Salat with Taraweeh Tasbih

All you want to know about Taraweeh Salat.

Tarawih Salat is Sunnat-e-Maukida also called Ramadan Night Prayer and is of 20 Rakats. This is prayed after farz Namaz of isha every night of Ramadan. In this Salat, Holy Quran is Completed.

There are lot of misconceptions regarding how many rakats are of Taraweeh. We have collected all the proof from the Hadiths and the books of the Islamic Scholars to give you enough proof about the Taraweeh Namaz.

Imam Baihaqi has reported through proper testimonies (Saheeh Asnad) from Saeb bin Yazeed (may Allah be pleased with him) that people used to offer 20 Cycles (Rakaats) for the Taraweeh Prayer during the caliphate of Syedna Umar Farouk and this was the norm even during the caliphates of Syedna Osman and Syedna Ali (may Allah be pleased with them).

Taraweeh Niyaat

In English: Make intention of Sunnat-e-Maukida for the sake of Allah, faciing towards Kaaba, Behind the Imam and say "Allahu Akbar "

In Hindi: Niyaat ki maine 2 rakat Sunnat-e-Maukida wasste Allah Ta'alla ke, muhh mera taraf kaa'ba sharif ke taraf, piche is Imam ke Allahu Akbar

The Taraweeh should be offered in Cycles (Rakaats) of two each. After every 4 Cycles, it is recommended to sit for approximately the time it take to offer 4 Cycles. While sitting, one may keep quiet or recite the Kalemah, or the Salutations or recite the following “Tasbeeh”:

Taraweeh Salat Tasbih

Subhanal Malikil Quddus;
Subhana dhil Mulki wal Malakuti;
Subhana dhil izzati wal aDhmati wal haybati wal Qudrati;
wal kibriyaa’i wal jabaroot;
Subhanal Malikil hayyil ladhi, la yunaamu wa layamutu;
Subbuhun, Quddusun, Rabbuna Rabbul malaa’ikati war-rooh;
Allahumma Ajirnee Minan Naar;
Ya Mujeero, Ya Mujeero, Ya Mujeer.

“Pure is He (Allah), the Owner of the Kingdom and the Sovereignty; Pure is He, the Owner of Honour, and Greatness, and Reverence, and Power, and Superiority, and Might; Pure is the Real King Who is Alive - there is neither sleep nor death for Him; He is the Utmost Pure, and the Holy, the Master of all Angels and of the Spirit; O Allah !! Save us from the fire – O Saviour, O Emancipator, O Protector !!”

Reciting the entire Quran in the Taraweeh is an emphasised Sunnah (Muakkadah). Completing it twice is better and thrice is best. It is obligatory upon the “Imaam” or the Memoriser (Hafiz) to recite the Quran with proper pronunciation. Charging money or fixing wages for leading Taraweeh Prayers is also not permitted - the payer and the receiver of such compensation, both are sinners.

The time for Taraweeh is after the Obligatory (Farz) Night (Isha) Prayers and lasts up to dawn. If one does not offer the Night Prayer with the congregation, he must offer it alone and then join the Taraweeh congregation. However he must offer the Witr Prayer alone, without congregation. It is better to offer the Taraweeh in the mosque, alongwith the congregation.

Hadiths on 20 Rakats Taraweeh from Concrete Sources

1) Imam Tirmidhi states:

The majority of the scholars practice what has been transmitted from Hadrat ‘Umar Faruq, Hadrat ‘Ali and the other companions that Tarawih is twenty rak’ats. Imam Sufiyan al-Thawri, Imam ‘Abdullah ibn Mubarak and Imam al-Shafi’i have stated the same (that Tarawih is twenty rak’ats). Imam Shafi’i has stated that we have found the residents of our city Makkah al-Mukarramah performing twenty rak’ats for the Tarawih prayer. [Tirmidhi – Chapter on worshipping the nights of Ramadhan – Page 99]

2) Imam Mulla ‘Ali al-Qari has stated:

It is the conformity of all the muslims upon the twenty rak’ats for Tarawih. This is because Imam Baihaqi narrates with a sound chain of transmission that in the blessed era of Hadrat ‘Umar, Hadrat ‘Uthman and Hadrat ‘Ali, the companions and all those who followed them (Tabi’un) performed twenty rak’ats for the Tarawih prayer. [Babu Fath al-‘Inayah Sharh al-Nuqayah]

3) It has been stated in the commentary of Tahtawi on Maraqiy al-Falah that:

By the continuous practice of Hadrat Abubakr al-Siddiq and the other Rightly-Guided Caliphs, it has been proven that Tarawih is twenty rak’ats. [Page 224]

4) ‘Allama ibn ‘Abidin al-Shami states:

Tarawih is twenty rak’ats; this is the ruling of the majority of the scholars and the common practice of all Muslims from east till west. [Radd al-Muhtar – Vol. 1, Page 195]

5) Imam al-Ghazzali states:

Tarawih is twenty rak’ats. [Ihya ‘Ulum al-Din – Vol. 1, Page 201]

6) In Sharh al-Waqaya it has been stated:

Twenty rak’ats for the Tarawih is the Sunnah. [Vol. 1, Page 175]

7) In Fatawa-e-‘Alamgiri (also known as “al-Fatawa al-Hindiyyah”) it states:

Tarawih consists of five Tarweha; each tarweha is four rak’ats with two salaams (made at the end of two rak’ats). This has also been stated in al-Sirajiyyah. [Vol. 1. Page 108]

8) Shah Waliyullah Muhaddith-e-Dehlwi states:

The number of rak’ats for the Tarawih is twenty. [Hujjatullahil Baligha – Vol. 2, Page 18]

Misconceptions about Taraweeh: Taraweeh 8 or 20 Rakat hain

Reality of Taraweeh and proper guidance on how many rakats are there in Taraweeh. Mufti Muhammad Shahid Barkati clears the misconceptions and confusions created about Taraweeh.

The Confusion is about the hadith from Sahih Bukhari that Hazrat Aisha Radi Alla Anhu said that our beloved Prophet Muhammad Sallahu Alahi wa salam did not pray or perform more than 11 rakatas after Isha Prayers. 8 rakats and 3 Rakats. But it is infact about Tahajud Namaz. Is Namaz-E-Taraweeh 20 or 8 Rakat's
