Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya Basant Panchami Celebration - History

Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya Basant Panchami Celebration - History

Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya Basant Panchami Celebration - History
The dargah of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya Rahamatullah Allai in Delhi observes the festival of Basant Panchami in its own unique way. The story goes that once the saint was grieving the demise of his nephew.

Unable to see his spiritual master in grief, Amir Khusro started wondering how to cheer up the Auliya when he noticed that a lot of people were wearing yellow in the village of Ghiyaspur (older name of Nizamuddin). Khusro asked people about it and was told about the festival of Basant Panchami.

Khusro immediately dressed as a woman in yellow clothes and went to dance and sing in front of Hazrat Nizamuddin. This gesture of Amir Khusro brought a smile on the face of the saint and since then Basant Panchami has been celebrated in his khanqah and dargah.

Only on this occasion, which falls on February 12 this year, are qawwali singers allowed perform inside the shrine of the Sufi saint.

These lyrics in the Purbi dialect of Hindi are sung in the Hindustani Raga Bahar and herald the beginning of basant, or spring. The song is sung on the eve of Basant Panchami, as part of festivities marking the occasion. This year it falls on Feburary 12 and will be celebrated at the dargah in New Delhi of the Sufi saint Hazrat Khwaja Nizamuddin Auliya. This is situated in the capital's Nizamuddin West, area, and is very close to Humayun’s Tomb, which is in Nizamuddin East.

How did Basant Panchami come to be celebrated at this dargah? The story goes back to the time of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, who lived from 1238 to 1325, after whom the dargah was named. Nizamuddin Auliya was a saint of the Chistiya silsila, one of four major Sufi orders in India. It was started by Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti, whose dargah is in Ajmer in Rajasthan. Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki, popularly called Qutub Sahab, whose dargah is in Mehrauli, a locality in southwest Delhi, succeeded him. Baba Farid, whose dargah is in Pakpattan in Pakistan's Punjab province, succeeded Kaki, and Baba Farid was succeeded by Hazrat Nizamuddin.

He believed that saints needed to have ishq (love), aql (wisdom) and ilm (knowledge.) He used them all in generous measure. Although he lies buried close to many emperors and noblemen from the medieval ages, his dargah attracts more visitors and devotees than the other tombs.

The legend

Altamash Nizami, a direct descendant of Nizamuddin Auliya who is part of the dargah committee, told me a story about the origin of Basant celebrations there. Hazrat Nizamuddin did not have children but was deeply attached to his sister’s son, Khwaja Taqiuddin Nuh. But an illness took Khwaja Nuh away from this world, which immensely saddened the saint, who grieved over the loss for a long time.

His followers, particularly Hazrat Amir Khusrau, longed to see him smile once again. One day, Khusrau saw a group of village women dressed in yellow, carrying mustard flowers and singing on the road near the Khwaja’s chilla-khanqah, a retreat where he had spent his life reaching out to people, which is located behindHumayun’s tomb. Khusrau asked the women where they were going dressed like this. The women replied that they were going to the temple to offer flowers to their god. Khusrau then asked them whether this would make their god happy. When they said it would, Khusrau immediately dressed up in a yellow saree, and carrying mustard flowers, went before the saint singing sakal ban phool rahi sarson.

Recognising his favourite disciple and amused by his costume and song, the saint finally broke into a smile. This was commemorated as an occasion for rejoicing, and since then his followers have celebrated the onset of Basant by dressing up in yellow, carrying mustard flowers and singing qawwali.

Khas Janwar Ko Khas Dino Me ALLAHﷻ Ke Liye Sawab Aur Taqarrub Ki Niyat Se Zibah Karna Ye Qurbani Ka Istalahi Maana Hai

What is the Niyat or Dua for Qurbani?

Recite this Dua and slaughter the animal with the words: “Bismillahi Wallahu Akbar.”

If Qurbani is on your behalf, then After Qurbani Read the below Dua:

Allahumma ta Kabbal minni kama ta kabbal ta min khalili ka Ibrahim Alayhissalamu wa Habeebi ka Muhammadin Swallalahu Alayhi Wasallam

If slaughtering on the behalf of somebody else, instead of the words: “Minni” one should say : “Min” and take the name of the person and his father on whose behalf the Qurbani is being offered (Taqabbal Min ______ bin _________)

Who should perform Qurbani? What are the conditions for Qurbani?
For the condition of sacrificing, the Malik-e-Nisab is the person who possesses 52 ½ tolas (620 grammes) of silver or 7 ½ tolas (88 grammes) of gold; or they have the same amount equivalent to either of the above item in value in business goods or non-business goods, which are not goods that are the basic necessities of life. The wealth and/or property should be ‘extra’/above one’s basic necessities (hajat-e-asliyyah).

Which animals can be sacrificed for Qurbani? Conditions for Qurbani Animals
Animals such as goats, sheep, cattle (cows or bulls), buffalo or camels are sacrificed in Qurbani. A camel must be at least five years old; a buffalo should be at least two years old; and a sheep, lamb or a goat should be at least one year old. [al-Durr al-Mukhtar]

The animal intended to be slaughtered should be big and health, and should be free from any faults or defects. If there is a minor defect in the animal, then the Qurbani will count, but it is Makruh. If there is a major defect, then the Qurbani will not count. [al-Durr al-Mukhtar, Radd al-Muhtar, Fatawa-e-‘Alamgiri]

How many animals must be sacrificed in Qurbani?
There are 7 parts of share in large  animal such as a camel, cow, buffalo etc.  So 7 persons from a house or any other can take part in a qurbani of the large animals.

In Small animals such as goat or a sheep, there is one share. So each single person, One goat or sheep must be sacrificed.

What is the correct method of slaughtering an animal? How to slaughter an animal?
What is the correct method of slaughtering an animal? How to slaughter an animal?
The method of sacrificing an animal is to lay it on its left, such that its face is towards the Qiblah and then place the right foot on its side and holding a sharp knife (concealed obviously from the animal or if it is blind-folded then there is no harm).
  • There are 4 veins cut when slaughtering an animal; the windpipe (channel of breath), the gullet (channel of food and drink which lies beneath the windpipe), and the 2 carotid arteries which are two blood vessels on the sides of the neck encompassing the windpipe, they are called wadajain. [Bahar-e-Shari’at and al-Durr al-Mukhtar – Page 640]
  • If 3 from the 4 veins were cut or most part of each vein was cut, then the slaughtered animal is Halal.
  • It is Haram to eat an animal slaughtered by an infidel, an apostate, Dehriyah or a neichri, and every other heretic.
  • If one did not mention the Name of Allah purposely, when slaughtering the animal, then the slaughtered animal has become Haram to eat. If one unintentionally forgot to pray it then it is Halal. [al-Hidayah Vol. 4 Page 419, Bahar-e-Shari’at]
  • Likewise, to slaughter in such a manner that the knife stroke reaches the cerebellum (the brain) or the head is chopped off then it is makruh (offensive) to eat the meat, though the meat is lawful (the offensiveness is in the method of slaughtering not the meat). [al-Hidayah, Bahar-e-Shari’at]

Whom should be the Qurbani Meat be given? How should the meat be distributed?
The meat from Qurbani must be equally divided in three equal parts: One for the home, One for relatives and friends, and One for the poor and needy.
